Sun Tzu once said in part, 'don't depend on the enemy not coming' and you know, we should have listened to that. Embroidered it on pillows. Tattooed it on the council's collected foreheads. We didn't.
And in the end, we weren't ready. When they came, we just weren't ready.
As luck would have it, we were just returning home after a long patrol on the Cardassian border; the entire crew was talking about reconnecting with friends and family, spending time anywhere but on the ship. I remember the laughter and how it died as we entered the Sol System. I'd given the order to contact Starfleet command; our communication channels were flooded with screams and frantic requests for aid while the forward viewscreen filled with explosions and ... Borg.
Then, in the clear, came a record message:
We had room to take some and, honestly, I couldn't leave them all to die without at least trying to help. And I wasn't alone in that. Starship captains are a breed all their own or so its been said. We didn't coordinate. We acted. Some went on offense, sacrificing themselves and their ships, while the rest of us took on as many refugees as we could.
And then, we left. And the Borg? They stayed.
The USS Jane Addams is an alternate-history sim set aboard an aging Ambassador Class vessel in the year 236j6. Starfleet, unable to mount a defense, has retreated from the Sol System and the council is presumed dead or worse, assimilated.

Sakura Meng had been told to arrive in main engineering at 0800 hours. Passing through the doors, it was now currently 0755 hours. The First Officer had contacted the engineer in charge the day prior with the blessing of the Captain to give Sakura a try down in engineering or wherever else he may have needed assistance. Michał Lipinski had the privilege of being given the Starfleet oath as he accepted the offer from Lieutenant Commander Reeves to become the Captain's Yeoman. With all that duty and responsibility came more freedom to explore the starship and access areas that he could not before although there were of course some places that were still not privy to him, and that was fine. He did not need to see the armory or expose himself to whatever 'safe' exposure there was to the warp core in Main Engineering. Working the crowd and schmoozing his way around the more social areas of the starship Jane Addams, Michał Lipinski had met several members of the crew so far and more than a handful of refugees. A Raisian luxury starcruiser the USS Jane Addams was not, but to crew the Federation starship had an ample amount of amenities and space. The eith deck aboard the massive starship housed a crew lounge and though Michał was not an officer, he was now crew. At least with accepting of the First Officer's offer to serve as Captain M'Raz's Yeoman.
