Physical Description His voice is deep and somewhat hoarse, not given to shouting and yet, somehow, he makes himself heard. His gray eyes can seem somewhat intense when they're focused on you but there's an active intelligence lurking behind his calm demeanor and you know, he's someone that doesn't miss much. He's lean and maybe looks a bit underfed for a Caitian and when not in uniform, prefers casual, comfortable clothing. IThen too, if he finds something he likes, he tends to stick with it which means, he'll buy the same things again when its predecessor becomes unwearable (little more than rag). He is well-mannered and polite and, because he reads voraciously, somewhat erudite in his manner of speaking.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Raz is outgoing, social, and way too smart for his own good. He is perceptive, somewhat intuitive, and good at figuring things out -- regardless of whether those around him want whatever it is to actually be figured out. He is a born predator, a hunter, which he applies to his duties in Starfleet (whether that's tracking down data or pursuing a Cardassian warship). While he uses the excuse that his career in Starfleet has prevented him from finding a mate (in truth, he's not looking), he's by no means a hermit either. What downtime he has, he spends with friends and yes, still finds a way to have an adventure or two.

He's organized and detail-oriented with a strong preference for cleanliness. It will bug him if a picture isn't hung properly or the cap is left off the toothpaste.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:
> Highly intelligent/analytical and a good tactician who thinks many moves ahead
> Thrives on challenge and has remarkably tenacity when it comes to achieving the goals he sets out for himself
> Fair-minded, ethical, strong sense of personal honor
> Organized and detail oriented
> Good at making connections from seemingly unrelated information and making intuitive leaps

Weaknesses:
> Having been a victim himself, Raz has a strong dislike of stereotypes and judgements based on appearances that goes way beyond the norm. It's a quick way to get on his bad side
> Stubborn/determined. He's not one to give up easily if at all. He will figure it out, pursue the questions until he gets an answer. Just his nature. The word 'obsessive' has been bandied about but seldom to his face.
> Addicted to coffee to the point where he's been called a functional mute until he's had his first cup
> Has trouble getting his mind to slow down when he's working on a problem which means he sometimes doesn't sleep well if at all. Tends to wander the ship at night when he can't sleep; shows up in odd places
Ambitions These days, nothing matters more than driving the Borg out of Federation space
Hobbies & Interests > Loves reading about history - the Federation overall, member worlds, and others.
> Movie nights. Bad movie night was a regular feature at the Academy as was horror movie night, science fiction night, mystery/thriller night, and yes, even the dreaded rom-com night.
> Holds the Grandmaster title in traditional chess (has several chess sets)
> Loves music and has somewhat eclectic tastes. While he doesn't play an instrument, he does love to dance. He learned Caitian folk dances as a child but has since gone on to other styles.
> Drawing - especially pen and ink sketches. Knows more than a few artists.

Personal History Born on April 14, 2329.

M'Raz, or Raz as he is known to friends, was born in a small mountain valley in an equally small province of Northern Cait. His mother, M'Ree, is a botanist who has made it her life's work to study natural medicine, based on historical references; her work has gathered attention for the healing properties of certain plants native to Cait. His father, S'hao, is an archeologist and historian, who spends part of the year at dig sites and the rest of the year at the university, teaching, and writing up his finds.

When he was young, Raz and his brothers often went with their mother on extended camping trips where they were free to explore while she collected samples, did detailed drawings, and took extensive notes. Course, part of the day was set aside for schoolwork; M'Ree gave her sons classics in biology and botany. Raz, who has always had an active and curious mind, enjoyed those classes immensely though he was alone in that. His brothers, anxious to do any number of other, more exciting, things grew restless and bored. To keep them entertained, M'Ree created scavenger hunts tied to her lessons -- those everyone enjoyed.

When their father was home, the family would take trips to the city, to visit museums, see concerts and plays, and attend regular school sessions. It was there, in those classrooms, that Raz first realized how different he was. That he was the only one of his siblings who had white fur with beige stripes had been just a curiosity but now, he was the only one in his classroom, in the city, with that coloration as well. Being different is not always a good thing. Connections were made. There were whispered looks and quiet conversations that he knew were about him but couldn't quite hear.

Answers weren't easy to find either. Rare and, at least according to his mother, uniquely beautiful. A kind answer but lacking an element of truth. The relentless hunter in him needed more and in the end, it was one of his classmates who gave him the key to unraveling the mystery. There had been only one individual in the northern province who had the same coloration as Raz did and that individual, S'rar, had been evil. Evil was subjective but at least he had a time and a starting point.

As it turned out, there was information in the school library on this individual; Raz took extensive notes, traced the crimes attributed to him through articles and witness statements. The depth of his research, which he laid out for his mother, surprised her but there was something else too in her expression. As he laid it out for her, inconclusive, circumstantial, easily dismissed, he could see the change come over her. This then was something she had fought against telling him but felt the time had come for him to know. He was adopted, the only child of S'rar, who also possessed the same unusual coloration.

Did that mean, as many were whispering, that he was inherently bad? It was a difficult time for him; there were many talks and much soul-searching but in the end, Raz decided, with a lot of help from his parents, that genetics might account for the color of his fur but not the nature of the Cait he intended to be. With his parents, he went to the prison where S'rar was living out the last days of his life having been caught the same year that Raz himself had been born and felt nothing toward him. A sad stranger that looked something like him and had never been interested in being a parent. He left the prison and never looked back -- he was the child of M'Ree and S'hao, brother of T'Kar, M'Rek, and S'Tharo. It was time to show everyone that the color of his fur didn't matter. It was what was inside him that really mattered.

Easier said than done but then again, Raz had never been one to take the easy path. He thrived on challenge and he had never been one to back down. Not to say that Raz didn't have friends; he did. Those who could see past the superficial similarities to S'rar, found him to be outgoing, friendly, and a bit on the adventurous side. Raz could never resist a challenge or a dare -- and that got him into trouble more than once, a price he understood needed to be paid. Didn't stop him when the next challenge was issued of course because that was just his nature. He did well in school though his attention drifted when the work was too easy.

Figuring out what he wanted to do with his life, well, that was difficult. His parents had their ideas but Raz wanted adventure, challenge, maybe an edge of danger. Even in his teens, he knew he would never be happy in a laboratory. He spent some time on a dig site with his father, entranced with a highly romanticized notion of what being an archeologist was, but that ended somewhere around the end of the second day. It was a slow and painstaking process, removing dirt in minute amounts, taking extreme care not to damage the artifacts. How disappointing to discover that you might know a tomb was buried deep below the surface but the process of getting to it could take months!

At the age of seventeen, Raz met the love of his life - H'iri. He committed himself to her and to their future together; her decision to marry someone from a better (and for that you could read untainted) family line all but broke his heart. Cait had not been kind to him growing up but when H'riri walked away from him into the arms of another, that was the last straw. He sent in an application to Starfleet Academy in a desperate move to get away and, when he was accepted, went off with his best friends to start what they all hoped would be a new adventure. And it was, it certainly was.
Service Record 2347-2351: Starfleet Academy, Command Major

Recognized for his leadership capabilities, Raz was put into the command track where he did well. His coursework focused on Intelligence, Helm/Navigation with extensive training in administration, astrogation, diplomacy, and law. He earned his pilot certification and proved to be adept at navigating complex situations.

2351-2353: USS Faraday, Third Officer/Helmsman

Initially serving as Helmsman, Raz was promoted to Third Officer after six months on board. His duties expanded and he was given the Gamma Shift watch. That as well as his extensive away team experience led to several commendations for creativity and his ability to keep his head while under fire.

2353-2356: USS Jane Addams, Second Officer

Raz was rotated through every department on board, given a chance to learn how they worked first-hand, as well as rotating the Beta Shift watch with the First Officer. He took distance learning courses through the Academy to increase his working knowledge of shipboard operation and continued to be cited for courage under fire and once, for deescalating a volatile situation.

2356-2360: USS Jane Addams, First Officer/Acting Captain

The Jane Addams was officially signed a patrol route along the Cardassian border and participated in a number of engagements in what would later become the "DMZ". When the ship, damaged in a firefight, found itself in a gravitic mine field, the resulting damage cost the life of the ship's First Officer and Captain. Raz assumed the position of Acting Captain, oversaw repairs, while playing a cat and mouse game with a pair of Cardassian warships. He was able to sufficiently damage both vessels, rendering them unable to pursue, and brought the Jane Addams safely back to port.

2360-Present: USS Jane Addams, Commanding Officer

As a result of his actions, M'Raz was made captain of the Jane Addams and has held that position for sixteen years, much of that time continuing the fight during the Cardassian War. Through a wide variety of mission-profiles, he has proven himself to be a canny and effective leader.
