Personal History H’iri was born on October 10, 2331. She was the first child born to R’Tau and P’Nara. Both of her parents were extremely proud and thrilled when she was born because they knew that H’iri would carry on their legacy. As R’Tau was a stern but well respected judge and P’Nara a local artisan of local repute, the expectations for H’iri were high.

Growing up, H’iri was a dutiful student. Her homework was always done on time and we neat. While she may not have been the most intuitive student, she was always the hardest working and her grades reflected that effort. She had a flair for cursive and calligraphy and loved reading books. Through that, she quickly learned that she had a gift for languages and she was able to pick up numerous languages with ease.

Boys were attracted to her easily. She was soft-spoken and perceived to be shy (because she quietly went about doing her work). However, she politely declined most. One day, while she was researching in the school library, she saw the most unique boy that she had ever seen: a white Caitian named Raz. She approached him and she felt her heart leap. In little time thereafter, they were dating.
Unfortunately, her parents did not approve of H’iri dating Raz. He was unlucky, evil, and diabolical from where they sat. Try as they might, H’iri was dead set on continuing to date him. To combat this, her parents took action and arranged for H’iri to marry the governor’s son: S’Tash. Before the announcement was made, H’iri was given the opportunity to break the news to Raz, which she did. What followed broke her heart more than having to marry S’Tash, Raz merely accepted the news and enrolled in Starfleet.

It took weeks for H’iri to smile again. However, she accepted her fate to marry S’Tash. It could have been worse. He was an extremely and traditionally good-looking Caitian. He treated her acceptably. She was pampered. There was nothing that she requested that she was denied. In time, she grew accustomed to this new life and probably even fell in love with him. So, by the time the wedding came, there was no sense of pretense, as she neared 19 years of age. The wedding, itself, was everything she could have hoped for and was lavish with a number of guests. She graciously thanked them all and enjoyed the company.

Many would be happy being a house Cait. While H’iri had everything she desired and got everything she wanted, she did not feel completely fulfilled. She had a sense of duty toward her people and wanted to assist. Consequently, she started seeking out jobs. S’Tash and his family were slightly aghast that someone of H’iri’s status wanted to work. After numerous family discussions, a compromise was reached whereby H’iri would volunteer her time for the Red Shield (the Caitian equivalent of the Red Cross). She never received medical training. H’iri was used for what became her expertise in organizing and logistics.
H’iri became pregnant shortly after her 21st birthday. As far as she was concerned, this was joy upon joy. She was becoming a pillar of her society. She was helping a wonderful charitable organization to become more efficient. She had a handsome husband. Now, she was going to continue the lineage. What could be better?
However, fairy tales rarely have “happily ever after,” in the first act. Seven weeks into her pregnancy, H’iri miscarried. Once again, she felt the familiar pain of heartbreak. This time it was for the child that might have been. Her husband was less than understanding. At times he blamed her, her “job” (which he always told her in quotation marks and in a denigrating way, or even for having been near Raz who clearly conveyed bad luck on her. H’iri started to withdraw into her own shell and spent more time dedicating herself to the Red Shield.

The more that H’iri dedicated her time to the Red Shield, the more that S’Tash demanded her time. He wanted to try again and have children. H’iri, however, was tired of the demands and did not want to be touched. She knew that she owed him this duty, but the heartache would not abate. Still, from time to time, she tried, but intimacy with him was no longer enjoyable and she did not become pregnant again.

Since something was obviously “wrong with her,” and she was not fulfilling her duty, H’iri decided that she had to try and put some distance between them. Perhaps after some time apart, they could find what they once had. Did not absence make the heart grow fonder? Not knowing what else to do, she decided, like Raz, to enroll in Starfleet Academy.

She had not thought of Raz since a few months after he left her. It would have been dishonest to her then husband-to-be to do so. Even at this, she did not consider him, but only the organization, and how it could offer her new experiences.

From 2354 to 2358, she attended the Academy. None of her habits had changed. She was a diligent worker. She might not have been the brightest student, but nobody would outwork her. As she was married still, she did not date. She did keep in touch with her husband and both his and her family, as was expected, but the conversations became fewer and fewer as S’Tash, his family, and even hers accused her of leaving and not fulfilling her duties.
At Starfleet Academy, professors were thrilled with her linguistic abilities. When she entered, she had picked up numerous languages. By the time that she left, she could fluently converse in Caitian, Vulcan, Romulan, and Klingon. However, she thought it was extremely inefficient that Terrans would choose not to adopt one universal language and discard the rest.

For a graduation present, H’iri received divorce paperwork. On Cait, divorce was not simple. Because marriage on Cait was deemed to be a lifetime contract, the divorce paperwork accused her of breach of contract, failure to fulfill her designated duties, and infidelity. Though she had not ever cheated on her husband, the accusation stung. H’iri reasoned that this was S’Tash’s family way of saving face for permitting a marriage of this sort.

Only one allegation of fault needed to be proved to obtain the divorce. While the divorce processes went on for a year and she was not found to have committed adultery, the tag in the local newspapers stuck. Consequently, if she ever returned home to Cait, she would find herself to be a bit of a local pariah. Free of her clan and her husband, H’iri had nothing left but Starfleet and dedicated every effort towards fulfilling her role in Operations. The divorce, however, was not completed until near the end of her tour of duty on the T’Kari.

She started as an Ensign on the USS T’Kari. In 2360, while responding to a distress call from a Federation listening post, the T’Kari was ambushed by a group of Tzenkethi raiders. The ship suffered severe power disruptions, knocking out main communications and sensors. With the Chief of Operations injured and the Assistant Chief struggling to regain control, H’iri—despite her low rank—took initiative.

She rerouted auxiliary power through secondary EPS conduits, and devised a makeshift sensor burst to detect enemy positions. This allowed the T’Kari to maneuver out of an ambush, returning fire and driving the attackers away. Her quick thinking saved the ship from significant damage, earning her a commendation from the Captain. It also earned her a promotion to Lieutenant, Junior Grade.

Now divorced, H’iri wanted to avoiding being near Cait, and took on deep space missions. She transferred from the T’Kari to the Lone Star. While on a deep space mission, they encountered a distress signal from a colony that was collapsing due to an unpredicted tectonic shift. 1500 people were stranded on the planet and with continuing quakes, were poised to die. Transporters and shuttles could only do so much and it was unlikely that everyone could be saved. H’iri devised a plan where structural harmonics would stabilize the planetary area just long enough to beam or shuttle everyone aboard. Thus, she obtained another promotion to full Lieutenant and served as the Assistant Chief Operations Officer thereafter.

On the Alpha Centauri, the ship chased Orion pirates into a nebula, only to be led into a trap. H’iri noticed that once there, there were power fluctuations in the shields and sensors. This was not unusual because the nebula had that effect on ships. What was unusual was that she noticed certain spikes in the fluctuations. Tracing them, she discovered that someone from the ship was communicating with the Orions and was a traitor. Through her efforts, H’iri was able to track down the traitor by decrypting the communication. These activities earned her a promotion to Chief Operations Officer and got her placed on the list for Command Training School.
When 2366 came, she took the opportunity to train for command, only to have more bad luck befall her in 2367….
