1,031 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Resistance is Necessary
Location: XO's Office

After the big meeting with the captain's and first officers, Jason had decided to retreat back to his office to go over review the footage from their battle with the Borg. Probably was a waste looking over it again as if something new would reveal itself. But the former security officer in him, just had to keep investigating. Out of nowhere his thoughts and silence were interrupted by the chime from his door. "Enter."

The door opened up as a familiar face that he hadn't expected to see enter the room. That face belonged to one Commander Dante Mendez. Looking around the room Dante smiled. "I would have just called, but apparently everyone is sticking to this radio silence. Mind if I help myself."

Reeves simply nodded as he watched the Commander help himself to the replicator. The man ordered a ginger ale, then pulled up a seat at the other side of the day. Mendez had voiced his opinion in a manner that pissed off his Captain which led to him getting checked in front of everyone. "So, what brings you here?" he inquired.

"Captain M'Raz seems to have a good head on his shoulder," the visitor spoke. "Wants to take the investigation route, which I respect. There is no cowardice in his reasons and clearly is willing to fight from what we have seen with the Jane Addams encounter with the Borg."

"Assuming you don't feel the same about your own Captain," Reeves mentioned. "Even though he was only following orders not to join the fight."

Dante chuckled a bit as he sipped his drink. "Hanoh Usall was relieved to receive that order. There was a look on his face that was hesitant. But the look of relief confirmed it. Then we made it a point to save as many on Mars a distance away from the Borg is the option we took."

"Which is why your so bothered by his decision to run and not fight."

"Now you get it," the senior Commander replied. "He wants to avoid a fight at all cost."

"Let me play devils advocate," Jason interrupted. "Perhaps Captain Usall is more concerned about the safety of his crew more than anything. Especially regarding an enemy that we seem to have no way of defeating at this current time."

"I was willing to give him a pass back in the Sol system. But out here with the possibility of a massing fleet to destroy that ship. There's no excuse for his caution."

Taking his words under consideration, Reeves turned his computer around so Mendez could get a good look. "Going over the information from our encounter with the Borg. We're not beating that ship with less than twenty-five ships."

"Damn." Rubbing the back of his head as he examined the footage as well. "We can get more ships together and mount an offense."

"That twenty-five ships is a stretch," the Lieutenant Commander replied. "The truth is that we need to develop more powerful ships to defeat them. And likely new strategies as well."

"Its not as if we Starfleet doesn't have several fleets at its disposal," Dante responded. The man was obviously frustrated. A Captain too afraid the fight the enemy, that figuratively tore the heart out of the Federation by taking the Sol System. You wouldn't happen to be interested in switching ships are you?"

Reeves burst out laughing to the question. His own laughter was followed by that Mendez. Standing from his seat, Jason walked over to the replicator to get himself a drink. "I understand your frustration. Having your own ideas on how things need to be handled. But our job is to support the decisions of our commanding officers. Regardless of how we feel about the situation. You might be one hundred percent correct about Captain Usall being a coward, but is he endangering the crew in anyway?"

Thinking about the question, Dante shook his head and sipped his drink. As much as he hated to admit it, Reeves had a point. The Ahwahee was currently not in endanger. "You're right. Captain Usall is looking out for the best interest of the crew. Even though, I feel he is playing is way too safe. But you and I both know these Borg likely won't just stop in the Sol system."

"Now I agree that Starfleet in my opinion is dragging their feet a bit with putting together some sort of Task Force to mount an offensive," Jason admitted. "But everything is in silence, so we honestly have no idea what whoever is running things now is planning or what moves they have made already. Are job right now is to handle things from our end."

Dante couldn't help to laugh. "Your good at this whole keeping calm thing. Normally those with a security background or wanting to storm the gate, but from a tactical standpoint of course."

Taking a sip from his own drink, Jason smile. "Being in the position of First Officer, I've learned to see things from several other perspectives. As I am sure you know. Nothing is ever what it appears and there typically a handful of solutions. But we try to guess the right solution while hoping for the best."

"Your right about that," Mendez admitted. "So, you think searching for answers is the best option right now? That ship won't hold still for too long."

"A ship that size with that fire power just didn't appear from nowhere. The Borg came directly at Earth with a flawless offense. Nobody wakes up one day and decides to invade. This took some serious planning and research. So, they likely been watching us for a while."

Placing the empty glass on the desk, the Commander smiled. "I wish Captain M'Raz and yourself happy hunting for the answers we are all seeking. Got to get back to the Ahwahee. Our Chief of Security is eager to get started with these new drills that he recently came up with."

Jason stood up from around the desk. "Come on, I'll walk you to the transporter room."
