933 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Admiral Ambition and the Borg
Location: Bridge | Deck 1 | USS Jane Addams
Timeline: MD004 - 1730

Raz came onto the Bridge and settled into his seat, his attention flicking from one member of the Bridge crew to another. "It's time to start putting all of what was said into action," he said. "Helm, set course for the Cardassian border. I seem to remember us doing a check on a Starfleet Intelligence listening post out. Make that our destination but keep us away from heavily trafficked areas."

Hearing the order, Micheal looked back at his Commanding Officer and nodded as he replied, "Aye, Captain." The young Betazoid then turned back to his helmet controls and plotted a circuitous route to the desired destination.

"Do regular sensor sweeps as we go but no contact with anyone outside of this ship without my permission," Raz ordered. "No personal communications. Nothing. Anyone tries to get around that order, I want them in my Ready Room straightaway. Clear?"

"Aye, Captain," H'iri dutifully replied. "I can cut external communications if you would like, Captain."

"Just outgoing is fine," Raz said, unless it's with my approval. "If someone contacts from outside, we'll answer it here on the Bridge." If someone was in contact with anyone off the ship, that was something he needed to know about. No matter who it was.

"Very well, I will deactivate all outgoing comms," H'iri dutifully answered.

"McEntyre," Raz said, "let's also put a guard on sensitive areas and make that a standing order."

"I've always got security details at Main Engineering, the Computer Core and Sickbay. I can also post sentries at the Bridge, Armories and other areas as soon as I can work out rotations" Elias nods from his station.

"If my calculations are correct," Raz said, "I think we'll have about twenty-four hours before we get in range. Am I correct?"

Having just finished plotting the multi-jump route, Micheal turned to face Raz and replied. "Yes, Sir. At warp four, we should arrive in twenty-three hours, seventeen minutes. Any faster, and we could risk detection."

"That's good," Raz said. "Keep us out of sensor range for a bit. We could all use a breather." He turned toward his First Officer. "Commander Reeves," Raz said, "if you would, make sure that everyone not needed on duty gets a chance to relax and decompress. Say, standby rather than off duty. Best we can do, I'm afraid."

"I'll let the crew know right away," Jason responded. "Be a good for everyone to cool down a bit before we see exactly what were getting into."

"Bridge to Sickbay," Raz said. "Dr. Pierce, you'll have about twenty-four hours before we reach our destination. Make use of the time as you see fit."

[Sickbay]

Dr. Richard "Popeye" Pierce glanced up from the biobed display where he’d been monitoring a crewman recovering from a mild plasma burn. "Understood, Captain," he replied, tapping his combadge. "We'll make the most of it. I’ll have Sickbay at full readiness by the time we arrive—triage protocols reviewed, field kits prepped, and my staff reminded that the Cardassian border never fails to deliver surprises."

He paused a beat, then added, more dryly, "And I’ll also take the opportunity to finish my cup of coffee before it goes cold. A rarity, these days." He tapped his combadge again to close the channel, then turned to his nurse. "Let’s run a full systems check and make sure the portable surgical units are functioning. If we’re heading into old Intelligence territory, we might just be stitching up more than scraped elbows."

[Meanwhile, Back on the Bridge]

Michael Harris manned his station and listened to the orders being given without looking up. He had his eyes on the sensors as he attempted to decipher what could be an early warning system. At the moment he had nothing. With the orders he wondered if there was an ulterior motive to their heading to the Cardassian boarder. Only time would tell.

"Notify department heads to start releasing those they can," Raz said, "and let them know that I'm going to want updated reports on their departments. Before 2000, Number One."

"Did you wish for me to meet with you to go over those reports Captain?" Reeves inquired.

"Certainly, find me in my Ready Room," Raz said as he mentally added, I practically live there anyway.

The Commander simply nodded, understanding the task at hand.

"I'll start rotations, though I will remain on the bridge, Captain. Taking first watch," Elias commented from his station.

"As long you take some time off," Raz said. "A burnt out Chief of Security does me no good at all."

"Aye, Captain. Though I would like a few hours to settle Clay in to bed and check on the sitter."

"How you work it out is up to you, just see to it that you don't work straight through," Raz said. He left the question of just who among the crew was acting as a babysitter unanswered for the moment as he did the idea that there were still children on board.

“Aye, sir” Elias nods his head and resumed his work, standing stoically at his station.

"I'll be in my Ready Room," Raz said as he rose to his feet. "I need to do some thinking."
